why the points gap matters
Norris arrives as a seven-time Grand Prix winner, so one win and fifth in the standings reads more like a missed opportunity than a championship charge. The profile is there; the points total has not kept pace.
There have still been flashes. Norris finished second behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo to help secure McLaren’s first one-two finish since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix, and he qualified fourth for the Hungarian Grand Prix before finishing seventh after being unable to keep Lewis Hamilton and the two Red Bulls behind.
